Swamp Coolers Still Work — Where The Air Is Dry

The High Desert is one of the last regions in California where evaporative ("swamp") cooling still makes economic sense. In Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, and Yucca Valley, summer humidity stays below 25% on most days — exactly the range where a $25/month-to-run rooftop evap cooler delivers 18–22° of cooling that an $80–$250/month refrigerated AC can barely beat. Tech On Call services, repairs, and replaces evaporative coolers across the High Desert and the rest of the Inland Empire — pad changes, motor swaps, pump repair, float-valve replacement, and complete new installs.

The most common service calls are seasonal startup ("won't run after winter") and pad-clog ("blower runs but no cool air"). After winter the pump typically needs to be primed or replaced, the float valve checked, and Aspen pads or rigid media swapped. Mid-summer, the issue is usually pad scaling from hard High Desert water, a stretched belt, or worn squirrel-cage bearings. We service every type — Champion, MasterCool, Phoenix Aerocool, and the older Brisk Air rooftop units — and we still install new ones for customers who want the operating cost.

For customers ready to switch to refrigerated AC, we quote conversions honestly. Refrigerated AC costs 3–10x more to operate but adds humidity control, works during the muggy monsoon weeks, and adds resale value. Swamp coolers cool better than refrigerated AC for less money — when the humidity is below 30%. Coastal IE customers (Corona, Riverside, Eastvale) are typically better served by refrigerated AC. Standard High Desert install — supplies straight down through a roof curb.

02

Sidewall (Window)

Older homes with side-wall mounts — still common in original IE tract neighborhoods.

03

Aspen Pad Coolers

Classic 3,500–4,500 CFM units with Aspen pads — annual pad swap.

Process

How A Real Evap Job Runs

  1. 01

    Call & Schedule

A real dispatcher answers — no phone tree. Same-day or next-morning ETA confirmed, and we text the tech's name and photo before arrival.

  2. 02

    Inspection & Test

Flat-rate diagnostic. Tech measures static pressure, airflow (CFM), filter restriction, hood capture, and IAQ baseline — then explains findings in plain English.

  3. 03

    Written Scope & Quote

You see the work and the price before anything starts. Diagnostic fee credits toward the repair when you proceed.

  4. 04

    Install Or Repair

Most repairs (boots, dampers, fans, motors, filters) are completed same-visit. Larger ductwork or hood jobs scheduled within 48–72 hours.

  5. 05

    Verify & Document

We retest static, CFM, and IAQ deltas and document everything — parts used, before/after numbers, warranty terms.

Swamp Cooler FAQ

Evaporative Cooler Questions

01

Are swamp coolers still worth it in the IE?

In the High Desert (Hesperia, Victorville, Apple Valley, Yucca Valley) — yes, 70% cheaper to run than refrigerated AC. Coastal IE — refrigerated AC is usually the better call.

02

How much does swamp cooler replacement cost?

$2,200–$4,800 installed depending on CFM, housing, and ducting/electrical condition.

03

How often do pads need to be changed?

Aspen pads every 1–2 seasons; rigid media (MasterCool) every 3–5 years.

04

Can you convert from swamp cooler to AC?

Yes — quoted with honest payback math. See AC installation.

05

Why won't my swamp cooler turn on after winter?

Pump seized, motor bearings dry, belt cracked, or float valve stuck — standard spring startup service.

06

Why is there hard water buildup ruining my pads?

High Desert water is mineral-heavy. We can add a bleed-off kit and recommend a service interval that flushes the sump regularly.

07

What cities do you serve for ductwork and ventilation?

Every city in Riverside and San Bernardino County — Riverside, San Bernardino, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Corona, Moreno Valley, Temecula, Murrieta, Redlands, Hesperia, Victorville, and the Coachella Valley. High Desert dust loads drive a lot of our duct-cleaning and filter calls; coastal-IE humidity drives IAQ work.

08

Do you warranty ductwork and ventilation work?

Every ductwork install carries a workmanship warranty. Equipment — IAQ purifiers, dehumidifiers, exhaust fans, hoods — is registered with the manufacturer and most ship a 5–10 year parts warranty when registered within 60 days. We handle the paperwork.

09

Do you offer financing on whole-home IAQ or new ductwork?

Yes — financing is available on qualifying ductwork replacement, IAQ packages, and whole-home dehumidifier installs. We walk through monthly payment options and any SCE/SoCalGas rebates before you commit.
